In this lesson, students will learn how to structure their informative essays. This includes an introduction with a hook and a topic sentence. Body paragraphs with subtopics supported by details and facts, and finally, a conclusion that summarizes the main point of the essay. In the end, students will use what they've learned to plan and write an informative essay. A printable graphic organizer and worksheet is provided.

Learning objective
Students will be able to produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to the task.
Introduction
Students are provided a tree map with a topic filled in, "School." The subtopics are empty, but examples are listed. Students have to determine and write in the subtopics based on these examples.
Instruction
Explain the basic layout of an informative essay → Describe the introduction (Hook, topic sentence - introduce subtopics), 3 body paragraphs (each is a subtopic including topic sentence, details/facts, closing sentence), and the closing paragraph that summarizes the gist of the essay and reiterates/mentions the 3 subtopics. This structure is modeled for students with various examples. Students will be given a blank organizer with all the elements of informative writing. Using topics they know well, or using a book/resource, students can fill out the graphic organizer to prepare to write an essay.
Quiz
Students respond to 10 questions about the organization of informative essays.
Closing
Using the aforementioned graphic organizer, students will write out a final draft of an informative writing piece. Students will be provided with a checklist to guide them with their writing.
