Learning objective

Students will be able to organize events in sequence when writing narratives.

Introduction

Students will share their morning routine with a partner. They will read an example paragraph of a morning routine and discuss what they notice. Review the parts of narrative writing.

Instruction

Discuss the reason it is important to sequence events in narrative writing. Students will name some examples of sequence words. They will read a short story but the sentences are out of order. Students will put the events of the story in order.

Students will read a passage about apple picking. They will highlight the sequence and answer questions about the narrative. They will do the same with a passage about trick-or-treating on Halloween. The next slide includes sentences from the Halloween story, and students will reorder the sentences.

Next, they will use a story map to plan events in a sequence that makes sense. They will look at an example of a memorable first day of school.

Quiz

Students are given 10 questions in which they are asked to demonstrate knowledge on key concepts from the lesson. There are true/false, multiple choice, fill in the blank, sorting, and multiple drag questions.

Closing

Students will recall what they learned in the lesson. They will use a graphic organizer (worksheet provided) to organize their own narratives. When they are done with their story maps, they will share them with a partner
