General

Students learn how the setting of a story can play an important and active role. They will read passages from R. Kipling’s “Rikki Tikki Tavi” and Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace.” Students discuss how different settings can affect characters in a story. Throughout the lesson, this skill is modeled before students practice independently, using the attached worksheet.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.3

Learning Objective

Students will be able to analyze how the setting shapes the characters in a story.

Introduction

Have students observe the image on the board and decide how the people in the picture are affected by their setting. Students might observe that the girl in the picture seems upbeat and excited. How might that change in a different setting? Explain that the setting of a story can impact the way characters feel and behave. Review the elements of a story beginning with the exposition to the resolution.

Instruction

Introduce the 3 steps for analyzing how a setting affects the characters in a story. Model these steps together with the class using R. Kipling’s “Rikki Tikki Tavi.” Have students describe the character and the setting of the garden. Discuss how the character might react in a different setting like a city. After this, have students practice together in groups with Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace.” Go over their responses together and click on the blurred covers to see possible answers.

Quiz

Students respond to 10 questions. They will be asked questions about texts read during the lesson.

Closing

Students will read an excerpt from Edith Wharton’s “Mrs. Manstey’s View” and practice analyzing how the character is affected by the setting. Possible answers are on the following slide.
