In this lesson, students will learn about different purposes for maps, like navigating around a city or going to the beach.
Students will be able to describe how maps are used for different purposes.
Students will review what a map is and why maps are important. Then they will be introduced to how they can be used for different purposes. For example, a school fire drill, trip to the zoo, school library, etc.
Students will identify various kinds of maps and their purposes. Then they will complete an activity to reinforce the importance of using a map for a specific purpose. They will discuss with a partner about how a certain kind of map would come in handy in a certain place. Students will look at an assortment of maps and decide what the purpose of each map might be and then describe to the class the purpose of each map.
