General

Comparing different things can help us understand the world better. When we compare a pillow to a rug or carpet, for example, we can identify qualities that are unique to each object (one goes on the bed and one goes on the floor) and qualities that are similar between the objects (you can find them in a house). Similes and metaphors are two types of figurative language we can use to make comparisons between objects to make our language more interesting. A simile makes a comparison using "like" or "as," while a metaphor says one object "is" another to make the comparison.

Learning objective

Students will be able to recognize the similarities and differences between similes and metaphors, and explain their meaning.

Introduction

Figurative language allows us to be descriptive and creative with our language, such as when we say somebody is "busy as a bee" or "quiet as a mouse."

Instruction

While both a simile and metaphor compare two different things, a simile uses "like" or "as" while a metaphor says that the subject "is" something else. If you say that "During her race, Gabby ran as quick as lightning," you are making a simile. If you say that "When Gabby goes swimming, she is a fish in the water," you are drawing a metaphor. What is the effect of using these two types of comparisons?

Quiz

Students are given 10 questions in which they identify if the given sentence is a simile or metaphor and are asked to define the difference.

Closing

Students are asked to reflect on how similes and metaphors are different from one another, and also to think about why a writer would use them in their writing.
