General

Fables, or short stories with a clear moral that typically involve animals, are a fun topic for students to learn. Fables exist across many different cultures and thus it's a topic many can relate to. The story of the patient tortoise and over-eager hare is a story that many will recognize.

Relevance

Fables are short stories that typically offer a very clear moral lesson. For their simplicity and power, they are a good way for students to practice reading comprehension and analysis.

Introduction

By the end of this lesson, students will understand the unique characteristics of a fable.

Guided practice

The Students are given ten questions in which they review elements found in fables. They are then asked to read the Ant and the Grasshopper and to identify key elements of the fable.

Teaching tips

Try searching 'tortoise and the hare' on YouTube by clicking the multi-colored media icon on the bottom-left of Gynzy, and then clicking the Videos tab. You can watch the short 1934 Disney version of Tortoise and the Hare. This gives your students another possible way to understand fables.
